1. The indication, occlusal design and handling will be discussed for
– relaxation splint;
– stabilization splint;
– reposition splint;
– decompression splint;
– verticalization splint.
2. Given the indication is correct occlusal splints can be mighty tools in the pre-treatment of craniomandibular disorders.
3. The primary advantage of the occlusal splint over other types of occlusal treatment is that the occlusion can be altered without making it necessary to then irreversiblymodify the patient`s dentition.
4.This lecture will not only focus on the preconditions for a successful therapy using different types of occlusal splints, but will also discuss the limitations and problems of this kind of occlusion-related treatment.

Especialista en prostodoncia, trastornos craneomandibulares (CMD) y dolor orofacial con más de 45 años de experiencia combinada clínica, académica y de investigación.
Experiencia clínica extensa en diagnóstico diferencial de dolor de cabeza, facial y de cuello de origen dental, tratamiento conservador de CMD y disfunciones relacionadas con oclusión, y rehabilitación prostodóntica compleja de denticiones funcionalmente y periodontalmente comprometidas. Ex director de Department of Prosthodontics en Center for Dental Medicine en Marburg University, donde estableció protocolos de tratamiento integrales para pacientes CMD y prostodoncia geriátrica.
Visiting Assistant Professor y Visiting Professor en TMJ and Orofacial Pain Clinic en University of California San Francisco (1990, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1996) trabajando con Professor Charles McNeill. Conferenciante internacional presentando extensamente en Alemania y Europa sobre diagnóstico y terapia CMD, conceptos de oclusión, prostodoncia de implantes y planificación de tratamiento para casos complejos. Co-editor de revista dental "Teamwork" y miembro de juntas editoriales para múltiples publicaciones dentales alemanas incluyendo ZWR y Dental Dialogue. Miembro de Academy for Practice and Science de German Society for Dentistry (DGZMK) desde 1990.
DMD de University of Göttingen, Alemania (1986). Formado como técnico dental (1977-1980). PhD (Dr. med. dent.) con disertación sobre axiografía paraoclusal en análisis funcional (1987, University of Göttingen). Habilitación en diagnóstico y terapia CMD (1994, University of Göttingen). Galardonado con Kemptner Promotion Prize de Working Group for Functional Diagnostics de German Society for Dentistry (DGZMK, 1987). Nombrado "Qualified Specialist for Prosthodontics" por German Society for Prosthetic Dentistry and Dental Materials (DGZPW, 1997).
