Todo ortodoncista debe aprender a planear los tratamientos así como lo hace un arquitecto a la hora de diseñar un edificio. Este último estudia el terreno, el tipo de suelo y el diámetro de sus columnas. Un ortodoncista bien formado debe utilizar las herramientas de diagnóstico auxiliares, el análisis de modelos, el análisis radiográfico y fotográfico entre otros.
Una vez obtenida esta información podrá crear un plan de tratamiento con la utilización de un pre- VTO que le permitirá tener una vista de las posibles rutas para resolver la maloclusión, hecho esto podrá llevar esta información a la recolocación de 1 y saber si matemáticamente es posible ejecutar el plan de tratamiento. Realizando este protocolo de planificación de tratamiento de ortodoncia el margen de error se reducirá al mínimo.
