Helder Baldi Jacob, DDS, MSc, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Dentistry (UTHealth), in Houston, Texas.
Dr. Jacob completed his dental education in Brazil in 1994 at Sao Paulo State University Araraquara School of Dentistry (UNESP). He received his postgraduate certificate in Orthodontics from UNESP in 1999 where he also received his Master and Doctorate degrees in 2006 and 2011, respectively. He worked in private practice until 2011 while managing to stay in contact with academics. Dr. Jacob joined Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in 2011 as a Postdoc fellow and became faculty in 2014 as Instructor. Working close to Dr. Peter H. Buschang, he has developed expertise in Craniofacial Growth and Development.
In 2016, he joined UTHealth as Assistant Professor, where he also received his certificate degree in orthodontics in 2022. At UTHealth, Dr. Jacob has been course director in Biomechanics and Biomaterials and Topics in Orthodontics, and he has been collaborating in several other courses as co-director and lecturer in the Department of Orthodontics and other Departments. In addition, he maintains an active faculty practice and research.
Dr. Jacob has been granted by the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation, and his main research interests include craniofacial growth and development, biomechanics, maxillary expansion, and clinical outcomes.
Dr. Jacob has published book chapters and over 50 manuscripts (peer-reviewed and special topics). In 2017, Dr. Jacob became Adjunct Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry, and in 2020, Dr. Jacob also became Adjunct Assistant Professor at UNESP. He has given international presentations in South America, and was selected as one of the speakers of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) Annual Session (2020, 2023, and 2024).
In addition, Dr. Jacob is the former president of the Society of Educators (SOE/AAO).
He is also a reviewer for the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Angle Orthodontist, European Journal of Orthodontics, Progress in Orthodontics, Journal of World Federation of Orthodontics, Dental Press Journal Orthodontics among few others.
